Urban and peri-urban areas with high population density are increasingly prevalent, with over 1 billion people currently residing in unplanned/informal settlements. Access to safely managed sanitation is lacking in these areas, leaving a significant portion of low-income households living without access to basic, improved, and safely managed sanitation.
In response to these challenges, the citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) approach has emerged as a versatile strategy to address sanitation issues in diverse contexts. This "technology-agnostic" approach focuses on the entire service chain and underscores the importance of addressing the enabling environment for sanitation, including financial, institutional, regulatory, social, and technical aspects, to overcome barriers hindering sustainable sanitation service provision in urban areas.

Situational analysis for UNICEF, Tajikistan. Conducting a situational analysis of city-wide inclusive sanitation in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, including the development of a SFD, assessment of the enabling environment, and the development of a costed action plan and strategy CWIS.
Water Integrity Network 2023
Assessing integrity in CWIS regulation frameworks (Zambia, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Tanzania). Developing a generally applicable methodology for conducting integrity assessments in the regulatory frameworks for citywide inclusive sanitation.
