Our climate is rapidly changing. Today, the incidence of flooding, drought, and other extreme weather events has a devastating impact on communities, a trend that is set to continue unless the global community takes urgent action. It has the potential to halt progress in improving access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and good hygiene and drive more people into poverty. In the face of the extreme and uncertain effects of global warming, services must be expanded and improved. It is more necessary than ever to increase the long-term resilience of water, sanitation, and hygiene systems.
At Aguaconsult, we support governments, service providers, and international organisations to ensure that water and sanitation are central to climate adaptation and growth strategies. We do this by providing them with the knowledge and capacity to prepare for the impacts of climate change through research and costing of mitigation and adaptation measures. We then help them integrate climate resilience into decision-making and planning.
The latest project we completed was a desk-based study on climate-resilient urban sanitation supporting GIZ and RCN to improve the understanding of interlinkages between climate change and urban sanitation systems and its critical link to urban resilience. The study included assessing the impact of climate change on urban sanitation, options for building resilience, adaptation responses in four case study cities (Cape Town, Chennai, Lusaka, and Santa Cruz), and making recommendations for future gaps and opportunities.
Our climate-resilient work spans a diverse set of services. It includes:
Working with development partner organisations to strengthen their knowledge and capacity to prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Developing and operationalising financial strategies for climate-resilient WASH programmes.
Providing analysis for the development of improved sector policy and regulatory approaches.
Applying climate resilient mitigation measures in fragile and humanitarian contexts.
Supporting the design of climate-resilient WASH programmes.
